Our visit to the Perth Zoo.

On Wednesday 23^rd May, Rooms 27, 11 and 22 went to the Perth Zoo to learn about animal? adaptations. When we arrived, we split up into our classes and went in opposite directions.  First we visited the African Savannah with Mr Sanderson’s class and looked at the African Painted Dogs, Rhinos, Giraffes, Zebras and many more. Then we split from Mr Sanderson’s class and went to the Nocturnal House. There we were able to see frogs, snakes, bats and owls.

Straight after the Nocturnal house, we met with a tour guide to learn about Asian Rainforest animals and their adaptations. We were split into three groups to go and find some information about the Gibbon Monkey, Sun Bear and the Sumatran Tiger. We discovered that in the morning, the female Gibbons make a loud noise to tell the other animals that it is their territory. The Sun Bear has a long tongue to eat honey from the high bee hives. The Sumatran Tiger has webbed feet because it helps them to swim after their prey.

After we finished that tour, we went to see the elephants. When we arrived, the zoo keeper was in the enclosure giving them commands to kick a yoga ball between each other. He also got them one of the elephants to water the plants with her trunk.

After lunch, we headed off once again, this time to view the animals in the reptile house. There were snakes and blue-tongued lizard and many more. When we looked at the blue-tongued lizard you could hardly see it because it had buried itself in the sand.

Then we quickly rushed to the penguin enclosure. Many of the penguins were swimming right up to the glass and some were just floating on their backs. We walked back to the meeting point and lined up behind the other Year Six classes. Then we walked to the bus and the driver drove us back to school. Throughout the day, all of the classes were required to fill out a work sheet about animals, their scientific names, where it is found, diet, adaptations and conservation status.

We would like to thank Mrs Querios and Mrs Williams for helping out. We really appreciated the help that all of the parents gave. We would not have been able to go unless they gave up their time to come and supervise us.
