NAIDOC Incursion.

Last Friday, we had our NAIDOC incursion with Leonard Thorne, a Noongar man from Boddington. We learnt about the bush environment and how animals needed each other to survive. If you kill too many animals of the same species, the animals that feed on that species would have to change their diet to survive. Leonard talked about how Aboriginal people are connected through their totems. Then we did a little activity about how animals and plants are connected through a food web. Leonard showed us a table with weapons, sticks, plants, foods, animals eggs (pretend ones) and much more. He spoke about how important Aboriginal Law is and the need for kids to listen to their elders. We sang nursery rhymes in Noongar language. Then we asked questions and he answered them all. We all had a really great time.

My School Rules.

The My School Rules competition began last week at Darling Range Sports College. My School Rules is a general knowledge quiz competition. Wattle Grove will be entering three teams for the heats that will run over the next five weeks. The final will be held during Week Nine. Our next heat will be next Wednesday.

Student Representatives Term Three.
We would like to welcome our new Student Representatives for Term Three: Brodie, Abigale, Fiona, Darcy and Maddison.

Super Scientists Room 26.
Wattle Grove Primary School has been holding it's very first Super Scientist Competition. The students were required to research a scientific concept and present it to the whole class as a presentation as an experiment or an oral presentation. The quality of these presentations was outstanding. Our two Room 26 representatives, Joshua Cannon and Alyssa Murray went through to the Year Six final last Monday. Alyssa Murray was crowned The Year Six Champion. Alyssa will compete in the whole school final today. Well Done Alyssa. Below are some photos of the students presenting at a class level.

ANTARCTICA PROJECT

Students in Rooms 26 and 15 are completing a poster as part of a project on Antarctica. Some of the research needs to be completed at home, however, the final poster will be finished in class. Click on the picture for the Project Rubric, showing the information to be included and the marking scale to be used. The project commenced in Week 2 and is due for completion on Monday 27th of June, Week 10.

BIG WRITE TALK HOMEWORK - WEEK 2

For Big Write on Thursday, we aim to write a letter explaining why each student should be selected for a visit to Parliament House. There are limited places for this opportunity, so make the most of your chance to join in.

Parents, please encourage students to think about what they know about parliament. What is a democracy? Is politics a good thing? Who is responsible for governing our land? Do they have an interest in politics? How do we give back to our community?

Leadership is an important quality for politicians. How do students demonstrate leadership at school? (Student Representatives). Does your child have a burning issue or interest they are concerned with, Eg. health, environment, equality. How does parliament impact on these?

We will be briefly covering the roles of government in class and the importance of people contributing to the country they live in, as more  preparation for this writing task. Any other assistance will greatly assist your child with this topic.

CITIZENSHIP PORTFOLIO

Over the holidays, it would be helpful if parents could encourage students to complete the first section of their Citizenship Portfolio, about 'Self and Family'. We are currently working on the other two sections in class, however, some assistance to complete the first section would be very helful. The students will be at different places as they have come from different Year 5 classes and/or schools, so the aim is to get as much done on the first section as possible, as we move ahead on the other sections in Year 6. Many students just need to make some adjustments, whilst others will have more to do. Please click on the link below to find out the requirements.

Citizenship Portfolio Outline

LEARNING TO PLAY NUMERO
We have been learning how to play Numero during our Maths sessions. It is a very good way for students to build their basic facts skills and number confidence across the four operations, addition,subtraction, multiplication and division. We watched an instructional DVD on how to play the game and then put what we had learnt into practice. We are going to include it as one of the rotations in our Numeracy Blocks and then we will look at teaching our Buddy Class the game as well.
